Safety: Our N°1 Priority

Aperam continuously strives to change mindsets in a sustainable manner.

In 2017, our lost time injury frequency rate remained stable at 1.4, compared to 2016. Although this performance is two times better than the industry average (2.87 as per ISSF June 2017 report for 2016), we continue to work hard towards achieving our ultimate goal of zero accidents.

Based on the principle that people must first believe in a philosophy before they will apply it, Aperam decided to roll out an educational roadmap on safety. Called SAFE, the roadmap is aimed at all workshop employees and their hierarchical lines. The initiative consists of a five day onsite, full-time programme that is supplemented by a number of technical modules using state-of-the-art training tools/methods. The programme demands dedicated trainers, committed leaders, strong organisation from the plants and the flexibility to adapt to shift planning.

Launched in ‘beta’ mode in 2016, full roll­out started with the programme’s first phase later that same year. This five day training week is composed of six sections featuring a mix of learning methods, including lectures, classroom exercises, shop ­floor training, team field assignments and debriefings. The learning objective is to ensure that learners recognise hazards, ­speak up and ­commit as leaders and employees.

In 2017, we recorded 35,000 hours of training provided by 20 trainers to some 1,000 trainees across Aperam -  and the rollout continues with very positive feedback from the SAFE trainees: " Initially, when registering for the SAFE training, I thought ‘one week: it will seem an eternity!’ But that’s not how it feels at all." and " I will take it again - and I really recommend everyone to take it."

5 ­year roadmap

> Based on this, a five year, six pillar roadmap has been established. The first pillar of this strategic plan is alignment, making sure that all of our 40+ sites work hand-in-hand and that no energy is lost. All best practices should be quickly shared and any risk swiftly reported. The second pillar is training. Expect more training opportunities to be added to complement the SAFE programme, particularly in respect to soft skills and behaviours, which is also our third pillar. The fourth and fifth pillars are audits and technical expertise. Audits include not only shop-floor audits, but also fatality prevention and overall maturity assessments. We are currently simplifying our three audit methodologies to make them more efficient. Technical expertise, on the other hand, focuses on best practices and incorporates a specific focus on near-misses (a 2017 action plan).

Lastly, our communications will be updated to include more high-impact, attention-grabbing images and videos so nobody misses the key messages. Based on this six-pillar plan covering all aspects of change management, a new plan will be set up and improved every year until 2022, with the goal of incrementally advancing our journey to zero accidents.

H&S Standards

Together, Aperam’s corporate safety and health standards help prevent workplace accidents and fatalities. As these standards are only effective when properly implemented, we established our Fatality Prevention Standards (FPS) and Fatality Prevention Audit (FPA) as measures for ensuring compliance.

Health: A local focus

Due to the diversity of functions, conditions and personnel found across Aperam’s global locations, many of our health initiatives happen at the local level. This strategy ensures that all our standards are tailored to meet the unique health needs of our employees. As a result, every year we see a large variety of local actions happening at each of our units.

Aperam is committed to providing a Safe and Healthy work environment for all of its employees, contractors and stakeholders and to comply with all existing local laws and regulations.

We commit to provide all the necessary resources, such as training, instructions, support and protections, to ensure everyone is properly equipped to work safely.
In turn, Aperam expects everyone to contribute to this safe and healthy work environment by adopting “My Code of Behaviour” as their own and strictly applying the “7 Red Rules”.

H&S Awards

To continuously enhance the safety of our sites, Aperam has internal initiatives aimed at promoting successful teams and sharing best practices. In addition to these company initiatives, in recent years many sites also competed in local challenges, including:

  • 2018 ISSF Safety Award (here). The International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF) has awarded Aperam its Silver Safety Award. The award, which recognises Aperam’s successful SAFE programme, was awarded during a special ceremony held on 24 May 2018.
  • 2017 Health & Safety Awards. In our 2016 Sustainability Report we highlighted the work done by Aperam Genk to reduce accidents and improve controls and safety in transport fleets, with very significant results and some carriers banned. Since then, this programme won the second prize at our annual International Stainless Steel Forum, thanks to its multifaceted approach and engagement with all parties involved. As ISSF commented: ”This is a timely reminder that our safety programmes are not confined only to the plants, but extend outwards along the routes taken by our transport.”
  • GESiM’s Special Prize, won in 2016 by a 12 member delegation from the Gueugnon rolling mill for their idea on enhancing the process for changing grinding wheels for rectification.
  • The Regional and National Competition organised by the Polish Labour Relation Commission recognises the best safety conditions at work. This year, out of 17 pre-selected finalists, Aperam’s Poland Service Centre took home the prize.
  • German BGHW 2016 Prevention Award, given to our German unit for their "Safe working on factory roofs" project. The team was selected from 60 applications.
