In 1896, 2 years after the first work on iron nickel alloys, Invar® was discovered. The Swiss physicist Charles Edouard Guillaume (Nobel Prize 1920), working closely with the Imphy factory, highlights the extraordinary behavior of this alloy with 36% nickel (no dilatation). Invar® remains the emblematic alloy of Aperam Alloys Imphy for its many applications.

In 1911, Pierre Chevenard continued work on nickel alloys. He was responsible for the creation of the Imphy research center and the precision metallurgy concept. His work earned him the election of a member of the Académie des Sciences in 1946.

At the same time, the space adventure is in full swing. An Invar® reflector is sent to the moon to precisely measure the earth-to-moon distance by laser. The adventure continues with the optical supports of telescopes embedded in satellites, with the stepper motors and the shields used in the orientation of the solar panels.

In the 1970s, the first integrated circuits appeared, the supports of which, also called lead frames, are made of N 42, an alloy with controlled expansion.

In 1981, the first TGVs in circulation were equipped with braking resistors made of iron nickel chromium alloys and magnetic components for electronic power controls.

In the early 1980s, the first quartz watches appeared. Their motors are made from magnetic alloys parts, with high elastic limit.

As of 1995, magnetic alloys contributed to the shielding of the first chambers for medical imaging of the brain. it is also the golden age of the cathode ray tube (CRT, CVT).

As of 2000, the structural parts of the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 787 are manufactured in Invar® molds while the generators on board are made of cobalt alloys.

90% of the world fleet of LNG tankers with NO 96 diaphragms is made of Invar®, entirely designed and manufactured on the Imphy site. The evolution of drilling conditions in the Oil & Gas promotes the use of special stainless steel and corrosion-resistant welding wires.
