Aperam delivers 3 000 tons of duplex stainless steel
3 000 tons of Aperam’s DX2304 duplex steel was used in the construction of 10 evaporators at Kuwait’s Az Zour North thermal desalination plant.
Kuwait’s Az Zour North Independent Water and Power Project (IWPP) is being developed over five phases. The first phase, which was completed in November 2016, included the construction of a 1 500 MW gas-fired combined cycle power station. The combined power plant is coupled to a sea water desalination plant with a capacity of 486 000 m³/day. The total cost of Phase One was $1.8 billion.
In order to meet the targeted fresh water capacity, the Az Zour North project required the construction of 10 evaporators. For this, they turned to SIDEM, a subsidiary of the Veolia Group and a leading specialist in the design of thermal desalination technologies. The company provided a Multi-Effect Distillation (MED) technology that uses Aperam’s DX2304 duplex stainless steel. By using duplex stainless, instead of the more traditional austenitic, the technology takes advantage of duplex’s high mechanical properties and gives the user the ability to adjust the duplex grade based on in-use aggressiveness.
Aperam worked closely with SIDEM to tailor its DX2304 stainless to meet desalination requirements. In total, Aperam supplied 3 000 tons of DX2304 to SIDEM’s subcontractors, which was used to build the evaporators and their related piping systems. This was all done with an impressive 99 % On Time Delivery rate.
